Churros With Wine

Churro With Wine

This is probably the ugliest picture I've ever taken!

The Story:

I'm a quarter Mexican. Oddly enough, I'm also French, which makes Cinco de Mayo an awkward holiday to celebrate, since this holiday toast's to Mexico's victory over the French. Because my Hispanic grandmother practically raised me and has roots in Puebla, and I was brought up in the Latino community, I choose to rejoice with the Mexicanos by knocking back a ton of vino with foods like carne asada tacos and churros. No, I don't drink tequila… I had one too many crazy nights in Mexico! Instead, I pop open the good ish and get my banda on! Salud!

The Pairing:

Since I've already discussed what wine pairs with carne asada tacos (Rioja), why not pair dessert with vino to add to the celebration? Churros are the perfect, classic Mexican dessert. You can find them plain or filled with things like chocolate and dulce de leche. I like to purchase Marenco Strev Moscato d'Asti to sip alongside this delicious, fried pastry. The wine's sweet pear and lychee notes marry nicely with the sprinkled sugar and cinnamon. The wine doesn't overwhelm the food, but instead helps to prolong the flavor. Like the dessert, the wine is light and airy with a slight sparkle and clean finish that helps to cleanse the grease off the palate in between bites. Plus, its low alcohol allows you to eat as many churros as you want and still party throughout the night. Happy Cinco de Mayo, amigos!
