Gingerbread Pop-Tarts with Wine

The Story:

Screw Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy pictures getting leaked, or Kris Humphrey’s first interview since his breakup with Kim.  I want important news, like the brand Kellogg’s introducing its new limited edition Gingerbread Pop-Tarts!  Now that’s a story no one should miss!  Instead of lame, hard as a rock gingerbread cookies, these pop-tarts are warm and gooey with frosting in the middle.  And, there’s even instructions on the back of the box, on how to make your very own gingerbread house using them.  Someone alert the presses!

The Pairing:

Although my gingerbread house turned out more like a log cabin, enjoying these pop-tarts alongside a glass of the 2010 Angeline Reserve Chardonnay was perfect.  The grapes are sourced from a combination of both Santa Barbara and Sonoma County vineyards.

After a bite of the pop-tart and then a sip of the wine, I notice how well the creamy round texture of the wine works against the cream filling and dense texture of the gingerbread.  This is mostly due to the wine being 100% fermented in oak barrels.  Next, I enjoy how the toasty oak and vanilla crème flavors found in the wine work with the toasted outside edges of the pop-tart and the vanilla crème center.  Plus, the ripe, tropical fruit stands up nicely to the sweetness of the snack, which is also possibly due to a little leftover residual sugar in the wine.  And finally, thanks to a long, cool growing season, the wine has retained a nice acidity that helps to prolong the gingerbread flavor and cleanse the palate in-between bites.  Super yummy!
