Totino's® Pizza Rolls with Wine

Pizza Rolls remind me of being young and single.  In my early twenties, I lived in a condo for a short period of time by myself.  Well, I wasn't really alone.  My grandmother lived across the street and after about a year of being there, I got a roommate.  My roommate was a fire fighter and not home often, so it worked out perfectly.  And if you're wondering, no, we didn't hook-up.  He was a nice enough guy but totally not my type.  He would work 24 hour shifts and slept most of the time he was home.  I remember trying to be quiet as I nuked Pizza Rolls in the micro and snuck back to my room.  I don't recall ever having a home cooked meal, unless you count walking across the street to grandma's house.  One early afternoon, my roommate began banging on my door.  I was passed out from a fun night and angry that he was trying to wake me up.  I shouted "What?" but heard no response.  I came out of the bedroom to find him on his knees with both the fridge and freezer door wide open and food, including my beloved Pizza Rolls, all over the floor.  He was stuffing anything he could in his mouth and his heart was racing.  I frantically asked what was wrong and he replied, "I think I'm having a seizure!"  He typically only ate red meat and nothing but protein and later mentioned that he thought the attack stemmed from not eating enough carbs.  I rubbed his shoulders and told him that I was there and that he was going to be just fine.  I knew what to do since I too had once suffered from a panic attack.  Within seconds his breathing slowed and he looked normal again.  I was happy to have been present and hope that I helped things from escalating further.  It's one of those scary moments I will never forget.  Although those years of living the single life were a hell of a time, today I much prefer having Pizza Rolls with a glass of perfectly paired wine and a couple good friends at my favorite wine store.  Life is a journey and I'm so happy with where it's lead me.  Cheers!

Totino's® Combination Pizza Rolls are the business after a long night of drinking when you want something greasy, delicious and quick!  Parents, the next time you make Pizza Rolls for the kids, pour yourself a glass of 2008 Canalicchio di Sopra Rossa di Montalcino (I know, it's a mouthful) and enjoy an adult beverage with this child friendly snack.  Although the name of the wine is intimidating, it's nothing to be scared of.  "Canalicchio di Sopra" is the producer's name.  "Rossa de Montalcino" means red wine from the Montalcino region of Tuscany, Italy.  Many people refer to this wine as a "baby Brunello," which is another wine from Tuscany that uses the same grape varietal, Sangiovese, but has longer aging requirements.  However, this particular producer is known for aging it's wines slightly longer than others producing the same style of wine.  The wine has notes of cherry, plum and spice mixed with tobacco, leather and earth. After a bite of the food and then a sip of the wine, I notice the spice in both the Pizza Rolls and wine working together hand in hand.  In many pairings, different flavors will emerge one by one after I take a sip of the wine, but not here.  The spicy flavors follow through to the point when I can't taste anything anymore.  Totino's® Pizza Rolls are only bite size and aren't over the top heavy.  Weight wise, the two work extremely well together.  Finally, the wine's inherent acidity helps to wash all the dough and meaty flavors off the palate and entices you to grab another handful.  For those of you who will typically choose Chianti when picking a wine from this region, give Canalicchio di Sopra Rossa di Montalcino a chance.  I think you'll be happily surprised!
