Sloppy Joes with Wine

Minus the temper tantrums, non-stop crying and occasional foul mouth, I was a pretty good kid.  For some insane reason, I loved cleaning my room.  Once a month, I would rearrange my bedroom furniture to make the place feel new.  I was anything but sloppy and even organized my closet by style and color.  I attribute this habit to being an only child who was bored and constantly looking for things to do.  To earn extra money, I would ask my grandmother for chores that needed to be done around the house.  Dusting and vacuuming usually paid $2 and cleaning the pool was worth $5.  Before I knew it, I had $25 or $50 in my purple, plastic wallet.  Temptation to spend my hard earned money lurked around every corner.  I loved pretending to be a mommy and would feed, bathe and push my doll around the house in her stroller for hours.  I had one of those dolls that would actually go to the bathroom and needed her diaper changed.  My grandmother knew how much I loved playing with her and would occasionally ask if I wanted to buy her a new outfit at "Toys 'R Us".  My answer was usually no, since I liked having money in my wallet.  As you can see, being somewhat of "clean-freak" really paid off.  Unfortunately, this good habit didn't carry over into adulthood.  Now days, I'm paying bills and can barely find the time to fold and put away my laundry, let alone have it color coordinated.  And instead of using my napkin in front of my grandmother at every meal, I'm getting messy and loving it with sloppy Joe's and a glass of wine!

You might be shocked to know that before sampling this food with wine, I had never tasted a sloppy Joe.  And honestly, I don't think I was really missing out.  But for the sake of this blog and for all those out there that absolutely love sloppy Joe's, this one's for you.  The next time you decide to make this messy dish, grab a bottle of the 2008 Yalumba Scribbler.  It's a red blend from the Barossa Valley of Australia.  The wine is made up of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Shiraz.  "Wine Spectator" gave "The Scribbler" 90 points out of 100 and after tasting it, it's easy to see why.  The wine has notes of plum and blackberries with a hint of spice.  Its round and creamy with a flavor that can be likened to Welch's grape juice, although not quite as sweet.  The spice comes through again on the palate and ends with a longer than normal finish.  All in all, the wine is balanced and quite enjoyable.  And although it has an alcohol level of 14.5%, I didn't get a rush of heat.  After sampling a bite of the food and then a sip of the wine, I notice how the fruitiness of the wine works with the sweet ketchup flavors found in the food.  The spice in both the food and wine mirror each other and the sweetness of the bun also makes a cameo appearance.  Overall, I like that the heaviness and full flavor of the wine matches that of the dish.  The two complement each other and I'm perfectly satisfied with eating the sloppy Joe now that the "Yalumba Scribbler" has entered the equation.  Hope you enjoy!  Cheers!
